The New Window and Door Trends of 2023

A new year is upon us and with it comes new trends in every industry from fashion to travel to home design. Already, the team at Tauranga’s Omega BOP is seeing a pivot in the priorities of home owners and we’re excited to see what our customers want for their windows, doors, and joinery. Here’s our prediction of what will be hot in 2023.

Elevated indoor-outdoor flow

With the rising cost of living, it’s no wonder Kiwis have been searching for ways to spend more quality time in their own backyards. We’ve noticed an uptick in outdoor kitchens, home gardening, and sheltered outdoor spaces, and this is a trend that won’t be going anywhere in a hurry.

This year, we’ll be seeing even more people in Tauranga, Mt Maunganui and Papamoa calling us to discuss sliding windows, sliding doors and bifolds. They’re looking to improve access to their patios and dissolve the barrier between inside and out.

Windows and doors that match Tauranga’s climate

Historically, houses in Tauranga – and NZ as a whole – were not built with the country’s climate in mind. For decades, electric blankets on the bed and extra layers on the body were just accepted. Now, Kiwis are well-travelled and have discovered that houses in other parts of the world are not freezing in winter, and they are no longer on board with a cold home.

Double-glazed windows, high quality aluminium joinery, and thermal break technology will never be more in demand than this year. Awning windows are popular too, as they offer air flow and weather protection at the same time. In 2023, Kiwis are prioritising comfortable homes and enjoyable year-round living.

Colour blocking and accenting for windows and doors

Colour blocking is when you pair opposites on the colour wheel for a dramatic aesthetic. It’s popular in the fashion world, but we’re also seeing this trend seep into the home design space. An example of colour blocking would be contrasting white exterior walls with a black entrance door – and to really nail the effect, that door would have black joinery, handles, and locks, too.

For an attractive but less dramatic look, try colour accenting, which uses complimentary colours to add some pizzazz to your home. We’re seeing lots of feature walls and brightly coloured entrance doors that make the most of this new trend.

Sustainable design

With climate change an ongoing concern, Kiwis are keen to find sustainable solutions in all aspects of our lives. Keep cups, second-hand clothes, and sustainably sourced materials that reduce our carbon footprint are all top of mind in 2023.
